How to deal with turning right at traffic lights

Soon after starting to drive in New Eltham you will need to learn to turn right at traffic lights, either at fiveways or by New Eltham train station.

Generally when dealing with traffic light right turns locally you will need to pass oncoming vehicles using the left side to left side method. Look out for road markings and filter lights.

Turning right at crossroads

When turning right at crossroads where an oncoming vehicle is also turning right, there is a choice of two methods

turn right side to right side; keep the other vehicle on your right and turn behind it. This is generally the safer method as you have a clear view of any approaching traffic when completing your turn

left side to left side, turning in front of each other. This can block your view of oncoming vehicles, so take extra care. Cyclists and motorcyclists in particular may be hidden from your view. Road layout, markings or how the other vehicle is positioned can determine which course should be taken.

When turning right at traffic lights pay attention to changing conditions and be prepared to turn promptly when there is a safe opportunity. The traffic to your left and right might begin to move sooner than you expect.

Avoid waiting across the pedestrian crossing section of the traffic lights as you may end up preventing pedestrians and also wheelchair users from crossing the road.
